MK-BREED for Crystal Shrimp

ARTICLE by SS, December 21, 2016
Summary

Learn about MK-Breed products, designed specifically for Crystal Shrimp (Caridina cantonensis). The products address the entire life cycle of shrimp, from the critical step of tank setup (Nitrogen Cycling) to feeding and routine maintenance.

Aquarium Setup

Designed to establish and maintain a healthy ecosystem for Crystal Shrimp by encouraging long-term stability fortified by healthy bacteria while limiting the growth of "bad" bacteria.

Nitrogen Cycling ("Cycling")  3 - 4 weeks
These products are recommended for use during Nitrogen Cycling. Cycling is the waiting period for a new aquarium to establish a Nitrogen Cycle. Cycling establishes a colony of good bacteria which breakdown ammonia and other harmful toxins in an aquarium. It's important to note that aquariums will naturally "cycle;" however, because Crystal Shrimp are extremely sensitive, the goal is to overcompensate. The importance of this process cannot be overstated, especially when attempting to establish a breeding tank for Crystal Shrimp.

Life Balls - 10 Balls
Life Balls - 10 Balls Cyanobacteria Inhibitor $22.95

Prevents growth of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), helps to stablize pH, and contains minerals to prevent mineral deficiency, and porous surface assists Cycling.

Recommended Use: Place balls on top of substrate layer. 10 balls per 100 - 150 L (25 - 40 gallons) of water

Z-Silver Powder - 30 Grams
Z-Silver Powder - 30 Grams Nitrogen Cycle Promoter $22.95

Adds minerals and trace element demands that have been removed during the reverse osmosis filtration process.

Recommended Use: Place 1/2 of recommended dosage in the middle of substrate layer and the other 1/2 in filtration system. Use 30 grams per 100 L (25 gallons).

Golden Powder - 30 Grams
Golden Powder - 30 Grams Microbe Fortifier $23.95

Facilitates the growth of healthy microbes (microorganism maintenance) consumed by Crystal Shrimp. Use 10 grams per 100 L (25 gallons).

Recommended Use: Spread on top of substrate layer.

Cycling Complete
These products are recommended once Nitrogen Cycling has finished. Conduct a 50% water change once cycling has finished. Refill aquarium with reverse osmosis filtered ("RO") water and treat with the following products before any shrimp are introduced. Add test shrimp and observe for 1 week before introducing your main population.

Blue Diamond - 200 mL
Blue Diamond - 200 mL Remineralizer $19.95

Adds minerals and trace element demands that have been removed during the reverse osmosis filtration process. Made from natural seawater.

Recommended Use: Add directly to newly cycled aquarium before animals are introduced. 10 mL (1/3 oz) will raise 100 L (25 gallons) by roughly 1 GH.

Blood Diamond - 200 mL
Blood Diamond - 200 mL Minerals, Vitamins, & Chitin $22.95

Adds minerals and vitamins to water that are necessary for shrimp health.

Recommended Use: Add 10 mL (1/3 oz) to 100 L (25 gallons) of water directly to newly cycled aquarium.

Aquarium Maintenance

Add the "good stuff" back to your aquarium following your weekly water change.

Because Crystal Shrimp are extremely sensitive to water conditions, a weekly water change up to 25% is highly recommended using reverse osmosis filtered ("RO") water. RO water is preferred because it is predictable and standardized; however, minerals and other nutrients are lost during the filtration process. The following MK-Breed products add back what is lost to ensure a healthy ecosystem for Crystal Shrimp.

Golden Powder - 30 Grams
Golden Powder - 30 Grams Microbe Fortifier $23.95

Maintains the healthy microbes in aquarium.

Recommended Use: Add 1 spoon for 100 L (25 gallons) directly to aquarium after water change has been completed.

Blue Diamond - 200 mL
Blue Diamond - 200 mL Remineralizer $19.95

Adds minerals and trace element demands that have been removed during the reverse osmosis filtration process. Made from natural seawater.

Recommended Use: Treat reverse osmosis water before adding to aquarium. 10 mL (1/3 oz) will raise 100 L (25 gallons) by roughly 1 GH.

Blood Diamond - 200 mL
Blood Diamond - 200 mL Minerals, Vitamins, & Chitin $22.95

Adds minerals and vitamins to water that are necessary for shrimp molting.

Recommended Use: Add 10 mL (1/3 oz) to 100 L (25 gallons) of water directly to aquarium after water change has been completed.

Food

Hand-made in small batches using a low temperature curing process to ensure maximum preservation of nutrients. Made from a vegetable proteins as they have a greater absorption rate when compared to animal proteins - the smaller protein size of plant proteins are more suitable for shrimp that have simple digestive systems.

Do not overfeed - adjust feed amount based on the size of your shrimp population. Keep your aquarium "clean," excess food should not be left in your aquarium after feeding.

Baby Stage

In their first 1-3 weeks of birth, Baby Stage 0.1 - 0.8 cm (0.04 - 0.30 in) shrimp molt the most, averaging 4-7x per week. During this stage, babies do not show much color. They have difficulty consuming non-powder foods and get their nutrients from biofilm and microorganisms in the tank, which is why microorganism maintenance is so important. When babies reach >0.6 cm (0.24 in), they can more easily consume traditional foods. The Baby Stage is their weakest stage and survival rates will be low without sufficient nutrition to encourage molting.

Premium Baby Shrimp Food - 50 Grams
Premium Baby Shrimp Food - 50 Grams Powdered Food for All Shrimp Types $23.95

Babies have a difficult time consuming, let alone compete with adults for, traditional foods. This fine powder ensures babies have ample food during the weakest stage of their life cycle.

Recommended Use: 1 spoon per 15-20 gallon tank with adjustmest for size of baby population so that all of the food is consumed each feeding.

Juvenile & Adult Stage

Juveniles 0.8 - 1.5 cm (0.30 - 0.60 in) feed vigorously and must take in large amounts of nutrients. If they do not take in adequate nutrition, shrimp might end up smaller in size, have shells that are not thick enough or are discolored, and may become infertile.

Adult >1.5 cm (0.60 in) males and females diverge morphologically. Females have a rounder body, in preparation for holding eggs. Males will have a longer, more streamlined shape. Males need ample food to engage in the "mating dance" in which they chase females. Females also need more food to encourage the development of a saddle, the undeveloped eggs appearing on the back of the shrimp - the larger the saddle, the greater the egg yield.
