- No substrate necessary to achieve optimal growth and does well in shaded areas
- Great candidate for cichlid and goldfish tanks because of its robust leaves
- Live freshwater aquarium plant with SubstrateSource Anubias barteri Care Guide included
DescriptionLike other Anubias varieties, Anubias barteri var. barteri can be grown partially or fully submersed in water. It has large, broad leaves that can serve as hiding places for grazers, fish fry, and invertebrates.
This plant is often used in goldfish and cichlid aquariums because of its robust leaves that are extremely tolerant to picking by fish. However, because of the size and sturdiness of its slow growing leaves, Barteri is susceptible to algae growth. In well lit tanks, algae growth can be mitigated by placing the plant in shaded areas, utilizing strong water flow, and trimming of infected leaves.
Although Anubias barteri 'Barteri' can be planted into substrate, we have found that keeping its rhizome out of substrate by tying the plant on driftwood or stones is best. Balance Anubias with fast-growing plants to maximize biological filtration.
